Planning a skating birthday party

Updated October 5, 2026 · 5 min read · sources listed below

Rinks that host birthdays sell them as packages, like the three below: skating time and rentals for a set number of guests, a table or room for food, and a few extras. The details vary a lot, from how many guests are allowed to whether you can bring a cake, so the most useful preparation is knowing what to ask.

Three published packages show the range: a county ice rink in Virginia, a township roller rink in Pennsylvania and an amusement-park roller rink in Oregon. Prices and terms below are as each rink listed them on October 5, 2026.

What a package usually includes

All three packages bundle admission, skate rental and a place to eat. Beyond that they differ in group size, food and how the time is split.

As published by each rink, checked October 5, 2026.

How party time works

Parties usually share the rink with the public. Oaks Park's packages run during its open skate sessions on Friday night, Saturday and Sunday afternoon, and Overlook holds parties of up to 24 during open skate. Overlook does not let party guests into the rink before the session starts, and extra guests can join the session but pay daily admission and stay out of the party room.

The order of skating and eating is often fixed. Mount Vernon's packages are one hour of activity and one hour in the party room, and every attendee must skate before eating: no food is allowed before skating time. Oaks Park's cafe table is booked for 45 minutes within the session.

Food, cake and decorations

Food rules are where packages differ most. Overlook does not allow food or drinks from home except one celebratory dessert for the group, such as a cake, cupcakes or cookies, and allows party favors with snacks only as families leave. It provides tablecloths, plates, cups and utensils, and bans helium balloons, wall-mounted decorations, confetti and noisemakers. Oaks Park stores your cake and gifts before and after the table time, and its open skate rules prohibit outside food and drinks.

Booking rules and deadlines

Book early and read the fine print. Mount Vernon requires bookings at least two weeks ahead, takes them up to three months out, and says a reservation is not final until payment is processed. Oaks Park needs at least three days' notice and asks every guest to complete a waiver before arriving, with a parent or guardian signing for minors. Overlook takes the $210 payment to confirm the party, is cashless (cards only) and charges nothing for chaperones who neither skate nor eat.

Questions to ask the rink

Use the packages above as a checklist. Before you book, ask:

  • Is the party during a public session, or is the ice or floor private?
  • How many guests does the base price cover, and what does each extra skater and non-skater cost?
  • Are skate rentals included, and are helmets or skate aids available for young children?
  • How long is the skating time, how long is the room or table time, and in what order?
  • What food and drinks are included, and can we bring a cake or other food?
  • Which decorations are allowed and which are banned?
  • Do guests need to sign waivers before arriving?
  • What is the maximum number of people allowed in the party room?
  • What payment confirms the booking, which payment methods are accepted, and what is the cancellation policy?
  • Who sets up and cleans up?

Making it work for first-time skaters

Many guests at a skating party will be beginners. Learn to Skate USA advises helmets for all beginning ice skaters, gloves or mittens to protect hands in falls, and one pair of thin socks; tell parents ahead of time so children arrive dressed for it. Fitting and lacing rental skates takes time; Learn to Skate USA suggests arriving about 20 minutes early for a class, and a party group needs at least as long.

Share the posted rules with adults too. Oaks Park and Overlook both ban carrying anyone while wearing skates, including small children, and Worcester's public rink requires children under 14 to be accompanied by an adult, a reminder that rinks set their own supervision rules. Ask what your rink requires.

Questions

How much does a skating birthday party cost?

Base packages in the examples above ranged from $210 (10 skaters at Overlook) to $400 and up (20 guests at Mount Vernon), as listed on October 5, 2026. Extra guests usually cost more; Overlook charges $21 per additional skater.

How many kids can come to a rink party?

It depends on the room or table. Oaks Park caps packages at 12 people, Overlook's party room holds 24, and Mount Vernon's rooms typically hold 30 or 50.

Can we bring our own birthday cake?

Often, but check. Overlook allows one celebratory dessert from home and no other outside food, and Oaks Park stores cakes for parties. Ask your rink before you plan the menu.

Do parents who do not skate have to pay?

Policies vary. Overlook charges nothing for chaperones who do not skate or eat. Oaks Park prices its packages for up to 12 people and allows no more than 12 guests at the reserved table, so ask how adults are counted.

How far ahead should I book a skating party?

Mount Vernon requires at least two weeks and Oaks Park at least three days. Mount Vernon also notes that requests take processing time and recommends booking early.
