How much does ice skating and roller skating cost?

Updated October 5, 2026 · 5 min read · sources listed below

There is no national price list for skating, and the averages quoted online rarely say where they come from, so this guide does not invent one. Instead it explains what drives the price and shows what real rinks and skate makers charge. Every price below was read from the rink's or maker's own website on October 5, 2026; rinks change prices by season, so check before you go.

For most people the cost of a session comes down to two numbers, admission and skate rental. Some rinks fold the rental into admission, some charge it separately, and some charge nothing for admission at all.

Three real price lists

These three rinks show the main pricing models: a county-run indoor ice rink that includes rentals, a free-admission outdoor rink that charges for rentals, and a township-run roller rink that charges for each separately.

As listed on each rink's website, checked October 5, 2026. Bryant Park prices exclude tax.

Mount Vernon Rec Center, Fairfax County, VAIndoor ice$14 adults, $10 youth (5-18) and seniors (65+), $4 children 4 and under, $40 family of up to 5Included in daily public skate admission; $4 on its own

What drives the price of a session

The same few factors show up in every published price list:

  • Who runs the rink. City, county and township rinks publish fixed fee schedules; Mount Vernon's fees are set by the Fairfax County Park Authority, and Overlook's by Manheim Township.
  • Age and household. Mount Vernon charges different rates for young children, youth, adults and seniors, and caps a family of up to five related people at $40. Overlook offers a $25 family rate on Sunday afternoons.
  • Time and demand. Bryant Park's rental price ranges from $18.72 to $64.48, and the rink advises visiting at off-peak times to save.
  • Session type. Specialty ice costs more: Mount Vernon charges $17 for pick-up hockey, stick and puck or ice dance sessions, and $9 for figure skaters' freestyle sessions.
  • How often you go. Multi-visit books cut the per-visit price. Mount Vernon's 10-visit adult book costs $90, or $9 a visit against $14 for a single visit, though the book does not include skate rental.
  • Extras. Bryant Park lists skate aid rental at $26 (free before 10:30 am when available), locks and socks at $6.24, bag check at $6.24 per item, and free helmet rental and shoe check.

Lessons and learn-to-play programs

Group lessons have two parts. Learn to Skate USA, the national beginner program, charges $20 per season (July 1 to June 30) for membership, which brings its curriculum, secondary sports accident insurance and app; some rinks include that fee in their class registration and some ask you to pay it separately. The class fees themselves are set by each rink, so check the local program's website. For private or semi-private lessons with a coach, Learn to Skate USA suggests asking the rink's skating director.

Hockey has free entry points. USA Hockey's Try Hockey For Free days let children try the sport at no cost, mainly ages 4 to 9, with national dates of October 3, 2026 and February 27, 2027, and most host rinks lend equipment. For adults, a 2019 USA Hockey article describes its Adult First Goal program, which gives qualifying registered adult leagues equipment so first-timers can try hockey without buying gear; a league organizer quoted there names gear and league fees as the big expenses.

Owning skates

Skate prices range widely by type and level. As listed on the makers' own stores on October 5, 2026, Impala's basic quad skate cost $107 and Moxi's Lolly outdoor complete quad skate $399, while True's Catalyst 9X4 senior hockey skate started at $1,079.99. For figure skating, Riedell recommends that beginner and intermediate skaters buy matched boot-and-blade sets rather than separate parts.

Ice skates also need sharpening. Mount Vernon charges $12 for 48-hour service or $15 while you wait; Bryant Park charges $20.80 for 24-hour turnaround or $41.60 while you wait.

Owning skates can also lower the cost of each visit: Bryant Park admission is free for skaters who bring their own skates, and rental fees disappear everywhere. Whether buying pays off depends on how often you skate; at Overlook's $5 rental, 20 visits cost $100 in rentals.

Parties and private ice

Birthday packages are priced per group. Mount Vernon's packages start at $400 and include admission for 20 guests; Overlook charges $210 for the first 10 skaters plus $21 per extra skater; and Oaks Park's roller rink packages in Portland, Oregon, start at $215 for up to 12 people. Renting a whole sheet of ice costs more: Mount Vernon lists $425 per hour. The birthday party guide covers what those packages include.

How to spend less

Every tip below comes from the price lists above:

  • Go off-peak where prices vary by time, as at Bryant Park.
  • Use family rates and multi-visit books (Mount Vernon, Overlook).
  • Bring your own skates where admission is free or rental is extra.
  • Check whether a rec center membership includes public skating; at Mount Vernon it does.
  • Watch for free introductory events such as Try Hockey For Free.
  • Ask about group rates: Mount Vernon gives 10% off public skating for groups of 12 or more who reserve 14 days ahead.

Questions

How much does it cost to go ice skating?

It depends on the rink. On October 5, 2026, Mount Vernon Rec Center in Virginia listed $14 for an adult including skate rental, while Bryant Park in New York listed free admission and rentals from $18.72 to $64.48. Check the rink's own price list before you go.

Is skate rental included in admission?

Sometimes. Mount Vernon includes rental in daily public skate admission, Overlook charges $5 on top of admission, and Bryant Park charges only for rentals.

How much do skating lessons cost?

Learn to Skate USA membership is $20 per season; the class fee itself is set by each rink, so check the local program's website for its price.

Are there free places to skate?

Bryant Park's rink in New York charges no admission (you pay only if you rent skates), and USA Hockey's Try Hockey For Free days introduce children to hockey at no cost.
